Growing up as an introvert in Southeast Asia, I was a shy and quiet kid. Even within a culture where people tend to be less verbally expressive, I was considered exceptionally quiet and often encouraged to speak up more. My reserved nature seemed to be at odds with the path of a physician, where daily interactions with patients and various medical staff are a fundamental part of the job. I was primarily focused on my own life and was content with that.

From my college years to my late 20s, life presented me with numerous trials, which forced me to grow and mature. I eventually came to the realization that true fulfillment comes from serving others, and that my purpose extends far beyond personal achievements. God knew I had a lot of growing up to do, and that I did. I began to develop better communication skills, build meaningful relationships, and learn the value of selfless love—a very gradual process that did not happen overnight.

This personal transformation played a vital role in becoming a well-rounded physician. A mentor once told me: “In Family Medicine, we are in the people business”, and that rings truer than ever because we are treating not just diseases or medical conditions, but more importantly, human beings with mental and emotional needs. It was during this period of growth that I came to understand the kind of physician I wanted to be—one who is not only technically skilled, but also deeply compassionate and committed to serving others with care and respect. Once seen as seemingly incompatible with being a physician, my introverted nature actually lends itself to introspective tendencies, which can be an important asset in patient care as it enhances my ability to empathize sincerely.

My journey to becoming a physician, though, followed an unconventional path. Medical school equipped me with medical knowledge and training, but life taught me so much more about people and relationships. I worked as a medical resident in my home country, then stateside as a medical scribe, YouTube content creator, medical transcriptionist, and medical assistant. These diverse experiences shaped me into who I am today—the best version of myself I have ever been, ready to serve as a physician in the local community.

Treating patients holistically demands selflessness and sacrifice. Many residency programs excel at training residents to be technically competent doctors, but Gadsden FMR stood out to me because selflessness is not just emphasized; it is ingrained in their way of life. The faculty genuinely care for their residents and patients, going above and beyond to offer unparalleled sincerity and compassion, and it is truly humbling that I get to be part of such a team.

On top of everything, my wife has recently been accepted into the Gadsden State Community College nursing program and plans to work as a registered nurse at GRMC in the near future! We feel blessed to call Gadsden our new home and look forward to raising our three kids here, knowing that God has placed us here for His purpose.
